Twilight Pay It Forward

After you finished reading Twilight did you not immediately make a mental list of people you wanted to pass the book to? I had one with four of my friends who I knew wouldn't pick something up like this by themselves, and of the four, none were takers! The reasons ranged from Stephenie's "amateur" writing style to Bella's "whininess" to the "five-hundred pages where nothing happens."

Anyway, the whole point of wanting to get other people you know to read these books is so that you can have someone to talk to about them. Very much a self-serving purpose when I think about it.

Over the summer I was having frozen yogurt with BFF and one of our mutual friends we've known since 5th grade. We were catching up on what we've been up to before inevitably getting to the "the good stuff"--she wants to know if BFF and I are seeing anyone. BFF is, her story much like the stereotypical movie character of any early twenty-something who graduates college and moves into the city with her musician boyfriend and his cat. I, on the other hand, have no updates in this department and it's not a surprise to anyone at the table.

"You've always been so picky," she says to me, "What are you looking for?" I feign an exasperated sigh as we get into this, and BFF smirks (she was a non-taker, by the way) and says on my behalf, "Edward."

"Who's Edward?" our friend's eyes light up for a second thinking there's some gossip ahead. "Nothing," I say and BFF says, "He's a vampire from Twilight." They both laugh and our friend comments, "Oh yeah? I saw the movie, it was pretty good. I haven't read the books, though. I heard they're good too."

I don't know why it took so long for me to pass her my books, but she just finished reading them with, from what I understand, the same voracity as I had. One of the best qualities of my friend in particular is that I've always loved how she's so open-minded and vocal about things. She texted me as soon as she'd finished Twilight asking me to borrow the second book. I suggested when she finish reading all of them that we have a marathon of the two movies which she was more than on board for.

I couldn't believe that while watching Twilight for the umpteenth time on Friday with her that I discovered something new. Was I the only one that never noticed Victoria in the background here?

Watching Twilight with her was beyond fun. She did see Twilight before reading the books (um, she tells me too that she went to the theater with a GUY who liked it!), but she realizes now there was so much stuff she did NOT get the first time around. Every time a scene would come up that exemplified that, she'd turn to me and say, "Yeah! When I saw this part I was like, 'What the HECK is going on?'"

Some of these parts included:

Edward's hand covering his mouth when Bella walks into the bio lab.

Bella asking Edward, "Hey, did you get contacts?"

Edward revealing why he doesn't go out in the sunlight. ("I didn't get it, I was like, 'why is he so sweaty?'")

Edward telling Bella he's dangerous. ("Why is he yelling? I don't remember him being so angry in the book.")

When we watched New Moon (this she hadn't seen), she had plenty of things to say about Jacob's transformation. In particular, "Whoa, he has a really nice back" when he turns to run off after he breaks up with Bella.

(Completely gratuitous shot of Taylor for those of you who are into this kind of thing.)

She also couldn't stop giggling over how Mike looked even less appealing than he did in Twilight and didn't understand why Jessica would like him. ("What happened to Mike?? He is not looking too good.")

During the very last scene, about ten seconds before it ends and before Edward asks Bella to marry him, she suddenly remembers the end in the book and says to me, "Wait, it's not going to end soon is it?"

I just look at her and she wails, "Nooooooooo! How can they end it like thissssssss?!" when she gets her answer. "When is the next one coming out??" I tell her this June and she says, "Really!?!"

And I now have a new person to go join me midnight Eclipse ;)

I got quite a few people to read Twilight, or at least try reading Twilight, but no one got into it that much. There were a couple texts as people finished each book, but nothing after that. My friend who lent me the books in the first place I think even got a little scared of me after I texted her a million times after every other chapter practically lol

I never noticed Victoria in the background before either.

"Why is he so sweaty!?" lol

I didn't get the whole sparkly thing at first either. I just thought, "That's it!?" You would think that after a couple thousand years vampires would have figured out some way to get around it or make up some skin disease that explains it.

I'm happy that you have a new Twitarded friend! I loaned the books to my Mom and one friend, and they both liked it, but not to the extent I did. I think it was just another book series for both of them. I haven't loaned my books out again, but one of TH's friends read the series on her own and now we've totally bonded (and are going to FOOORRRRRRRKKKKSSSS together), so that's nice. It's wonderful to have someone in RL to share the obsession!

Too funny that you just noticed Victoria - I noticed her for the first time the last time I watched it, too (about two weeks ago). LOL! She's an Easter Egg for sure!

I love it that you and your friend have connected on a Twilight level :) I did notice Victoria in that scene and I always said that it made no sense that Edward wouldn't be able to read her mind or that Alice wouldn't have had a premonition that she was there.

@Amy - Wow do I get what you are saying. The co-worker who practically shoved the original Twilight book down my throat and said I had to read it is even wondering if I've gone of the deep end. LOL! Oh, well. What's a little recreational cliff diving, right?

That's why I love blogging so much. We all get it and get each other.

It was the strangest thing, right when I was watching it with her, Victoria just popped out at me during that scene. Lisa brings up a good point--Edward and Alice should have totally noticed her too! Well, that's just another tiny error on Catherine's end. The other thing I always wondered about was the deleted scene where Edward bites down on Bella's finger. That would NEVER have worked in the movie, so understandably it's deleted, however it makes me wonder if Catherine just wanted to see them do that herself lol.

Amy and Lisa, same here, my friend who gave me the book also is NO WHERE near as interested in Twilight as I am. If ever there is a person who is to blame it's her!

MB, still envious of your FORKS trip. There needs to be a blogger convention somewhere. Someone please set that up lol. My mom is definitely a fan too, but we're on different levels. She's even trying to get her friends to read them!

I think you're on to something, SFT. I think Catherine was totally into Robsten! LOL!!

So I've visited your posts only a couple times now and I always get this "Can you feel the love tonight" Lion king fell in love with the Robsten sense. If that makes no sense to you I mean it is all softly romantic. LOL

Enjoy the friendship over this! I wish I had this when I was in my twenties! But now that I am in my thirties I have reconnected with lots of friends rooted in Twilight.

My bubbling over with excitement to share twilight has worked in different ways. I have friends who love it but are not as out of the closet as me(And oh I could tell you stories about that!) But even with the friends who don't love it, it has sparked so many fun conversations especially about old crushes and boyfriends and crazy teenage years. Like "Did you have a crush on your biology partner? Oh my gosh HIM! REally?? I totally forgot!" That type of thing, and from there the laughs ensue all stemming from Twilight.

I totally get the Twilight: Pay it Forward concept. I first saw the movie with my friend and then she lent me the books and I read them all in like a day. And ironically she thinks I'm "crazy about the silly Twilight stuff" (you can't see it but I'm rolling my eyes right now)

So for awhile I had absolutely no one to share my Twilight interests with. Then one day my co worker comes in and tells me that her daughter had her watch the Twilight movie and she watched it four times over the weekend. So her and her daughter (who is my age) went to see New Moon with me the first Friday it was out. Then when the movie was over we went out to dinner and they wanted me to re-tell all four books over drinks. Which I tried... but told them its really so detailed that its one of those thing you just have to read yourself. And finally these past couple weeks I got them reading the books and they are totally into it. She is waking up every few hours to squeeze another chapter of Breaking Dawn in. LOL

@Sparkle - another wonderful post, as always.

"I, on the other hand, have no updates in this department and it's not a surprise to anyone at the table.

I totally get the waiting for an Edward thing. I am so picky its insane. I just would rather be alone then settle. I mean, if an Edward came alone I would so be on board with it but if not then I am oddly content by myself. All my friends are "growing up" and getting married. I feel like I should want to settle. To find someone who is passably compatible, get married, and make babies... But I just don't and I can't make myself want something I don't. I don't want to settle, I want the love of my life or I want to be alone. I have no idea why I felt compelled to share something so personal but it was something I was thinking about today, I guess.

BLOGGER CONVENTION - can I come if I'm just a lowly commenter/follower? I'll even wear my T-Shirt. LOL.

OMG - I totally noticed Victoria but it never occurred to me that Edward would know she was there. He would have heard her thoughts. Definitely. Interesting.....

V, I just got envious of you telling about your dinner with friends and talk about Twilight. That's like my ideal date (shh... I didn't just say that). My BFF, the one that wasn't a taker, she only made it through the first book. Then on a car ride to the outlet malls about an hour and a half away she asked me to just tell her what happens in the rest. I basically summarized the Saga thing and I talked the ENTIRE ride. Did she ever get a kick out of my explanation of imprinting and Renesmee! While I was giving her the recap, there was so many times I backtracked because you're right--there's SO MUCH stuff that happens it's hard tell it all.

I agree with your Edward comment. It's not about looking for AN Edward, but YOUR Edward. Marrying someone that is the love of your life, what a concept right? lol

Ohh I'm so happy you've got a real partner in Twi to see Eclipse with! Having someone to share you thoughts with immediately is so nice. It makes the whole experience so much better!

"why is he so sweaty?" hahaha this never crossed my mind since I also read the book first, but she did have a point! Also the way his eyes look, kinda like he's wet.

@TongueTwied: I have friends who love it but are not as out of the closet as me (And oh I could tell you stories about that!) <---tell the stories! I know what you mean about discussing it, even when I talk about Twilight to my friends that protest it and its popularity, I still find the "argument" entertaining! Oh, and I got what you were referencing about Lion King lol. Thank you for stopping by to read my garbly thoughts!

Alice, will you be seeing midnight Eclipse over there? Again you guys will probably get to see it earlier than us here!

Thanks for the reminder about all the wonderful points of the movies that I'd forgotten about. I just introduced one of my best friends to fanfic even though she's not a Twihard - got her sunk into MotU and I love sharing the lemons!
